A Complete Home Remodel Checklist

complete home remodel

Whether it’s your first complete home remodel or you’ve remodeled your home several times, the process is always complicated and hands-on. It’s easy for tasks and small projects to slip through the cracks. By following these five straightforward steps, your home remodel will be a breeze.

Step One: Make A Plan

Figure out what changes you want to make to your home. Have a design in mind and know if you’re going to add a room, create an open floor plan, add storage, or any other design change. Plan them out, make sure they’re achievable for you, and set a budget. After that, determine whether or not you’ll need any permits or inspections.

Once you’ve cut through all the red tape, it’s time to take a good look at your home. Make sure it’s in the right condition to be remodeled. The structure of your home, its roof, walls, windows, plumbing, electrical, and foundation should all be sound and workable for what you want to accomplish.

If you need any repairs, take care of those first. It’s essential to have a good base if you want your remodel to go smoothly. Most importantly, you’ll want to work with a professional throughout this process.

Step Two: Demolition

Get a dumpster. This is going to be messy. Demolition is an essential part of a complete home remodel. You have to tear the old design down to rebuild. You’ll need to throw away old tile, drywall, insulation, flooring, and anything else that is being demolished due to the remodel.

Step Three: Construction

If you’re putting up new walls or changing your home’s layout, the first part of the construction will be setting the framing. Once it’s up, the contractor will begin repairing or upgrading all of the internal utilities. This includes electrical wiring, plumbing, and ductwork.

Then, the contractor will put up the insulation and drywall. If you’re changing the windows in your home, they’ll be installed next.

Step Four: Add Some Personality

This is the fun part. It’s time to paint, put up wallpaper, and put up the backsplash. Once you’ve painted and completed all of the messy upgrades, you can install your flooring. Waiting until the last minute to put down flooring will ensure that it doesn’t get dusty or ruined by paint.

This step is also the time where you can put in an underfloor heating system. This is an excellent addition to cold floorings, especially on the bathroom tile. While you’re at it, consider turning your home into a smart home by upgrading home security, lights, or thermostat to smart devices. If a smart house isn’t your speed, change the lighting and add dimmers to customize your home.

This step also includes adding cabinets and other additions like a brand-new bathtub or appliances. If you’re doing a complete home remodel, you might as well go all out!

Step Five: Decorate & Enjoy

It’s finally time to introduce new furniture and pick out all of the décor. The decorating stage is when your entire house will come together and begin to feel like home. Adding all the details can be the most challenging part, but decorations are easy to change if you don’t like it.
